Friends,
This week's newsletter is quieter than usual.
That's because we, our partners, and countless dedicated volunteers
and activists worked around the clock to help pass the 2050
Roadmap bill, the Massachusetts State House's climate omnibus
bill. The bill passed on July 31, and we're still recovering from this
mammoth effort. One of the biggest victories was in the inclusion of
an amendment on environmental justice; for some background on this
issue, read this USA Today story. Thank you for taking
action.
Things may seem quieter, but we're not stopping, because climate
change doesn't take a day off. We must commit to more
ambitious goals, including 100% renewable energy.
Unfortunately, there's a legislative stumbling block: many important
bills are killed in committees, including as a bill to bring
Massachusetts to 100% renewable energy. The voting process isn't transparent, so
it's hard to hold our leaders accountable.
That's why, last Tuesday, 350 Mass and Act on Mass submitted
signatures for two district-by-district nonbinding public policy
ballot questions: to set the goal of 100% renewable energy in
MA by 2040, and to make committee votes transparent
in the State House.
The federal government is attacking climate science left and right.
This week, we're hearing that the EPA is lifting controls on methane pollution, a
powerful greenhouse gas. Here in Massachusetts, we can show
the rest of the nation how to lead on climate. Let's get to
it!
In solidarity,
Rosemary Mosco
