Celebrating Our New Grassroots Chapter in New Orleans!

[link removed] [[link removed]]

This month marks the beginning of our newest Brady chapter in New Orleans. Under the leadership of LaRicha Alfred, the group held their inaugural meeting, inviting grassroots activists to join in the fight against gun violence in Louisiana.

This new chapter will focus on raising awareness about the importance of secure storage and empowering families to keep their loved ones safe using Brady’s tools and educational resources. They plan to host community events that will bring people together and highlight the often-overlooked threat of unsecured firearms in the home.

Louisiana has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the U.S., with over 50% of adults having guns in their homes. This new group of Brady grassroots activists in Louisiana creates the opportunity to speak with gun owners and meet them where they are, spreading the importance of secure storage of firearms to save lives.

A Dangerous Rule Change

Recently, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth signed a memo that would allow most service members on military properties to possess and carry privately-owned firearms.

The secretary’s actions put everyone who lives and works at military facilities in danger.

More guns equal more gun violence, period. Expanding access to firearms will not prevent mass shootings, as the secretary argued. Instead, it will increase the risk of mass shootings, while also increasing the risk of firearm suicide, unintentional shootings, and incidents of fatal domestic violence.

Military properties are not just combat training areas. They are made up of homes, schools, communities, and workplaces. They are also among the most guarded, protected properties in the world. They have never been “gun-free zones” without law enforcement protection.

Secretary Hegseth should not overrule current military commanders and go against the wishes of those who were on bases that experienced the devastating impacts of gun violence. National Public Health Week

This week is National Public Health Week — a time to reflect on the epidemic of gun violence and all the work that’s being done by healthcare professionals and public health experts to combat it.
Of the 15 leading causes of death, firearm-related harms receive the third lowest amount of federal research funding. This is despite the fact that firearms are the number one killer of children and teens in the United States. And this discrepancy is only getting worse under the Trump administration.

To address this problem, Brady has been working to reframe gun violence as the public health crisis that it is, employing methods that have been used to fight other deadly health crises. Our leading voices in this movement are members of our This Is Our Lane advisory council, chaired by Brady Board Chair and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joseph Sakran. This Is Our Lane fosters collaboration across the healthcare community and ushers in proven public health solutions to gun violence.
