Reaching a cease-fire with Iran doesn’t just “cancel out” these threats. Threatening to destroy an entire civilization is a despicable and horrific act, and it’s explicitly banned by international law.
Targeting civilians is a war crime. Destroying a country’s civilian infrastructure is a war crime. And even threatening genocide could be a war crime.
Trump’s behavior is reckless, deranged, and evil and we all need to take it seriously.
To my Republican colleagues in Congress: You can’t hide anymore. You have to abandon your blind loyalty and work with us to stop Donald Trump.
Whether that’s through impeachment and removal by Congress, or by invoking the 25th Amendment because the President is mentally unfit to serve — this is not the time for us to wait and see.
Both of these levers were created to be used in the gravest of circumstances, and threatening to wipe out an entire civilization — its 93 million people, its culture, monuments, and history — is the clearest example yet of when they should be used.
History has shown us that there will only be justice and accountability for moments like this if we do the work to speak out and demand better.
And it’s important to remember that anyone, in any part of the chain of command, can be personally prosecuted for committing a war crime, including genocide.
I’m doing everything in my power to hold this administration accountable, and I need you by my side. If you agree that Donald Trump needs to be removed from office and held accountable for his despicable actions, add your name to let me know.
I’ll update you when I know more, but for now: keep speaking out against this administration, and keep showing up for your neighbors and community in these dark times.
We’re in this together.
