President Trump has promised that, should he win reelection in November, he will permanently cut payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare. Not only would this severely impact the livelihoods of millions of Americans that depend on these programs, it would plunge the country deeper into turmoil at a time when they are needed most, as they are crucial lifelines to those hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic.
