John, Florida Republicans just
copied the federal SAVE Act playbook.

Ron DeSantis signed a sweeping new elections law that adds new “show your
papers” requirements and other restrictions designed to make voting harder
for eligible Floridians.

Voting rights groups are already suing, warning that this law will push
eligible voters off the rolls and disrupt voter registration efforts
across the state. But we can’t wait for the courts to decide — we need to
act now to ensure that eligible voters can still cast their ballots.

Florida’s Latino community is nearly 29% of the state. And this law
creates new barriers that will hit our communities hard, especially Puerto
Rican voters, married women who have changed their names, naturalized
citizens, young voters, and anyone who does not have easy access to
documents like a passport or birth certificate.

It also bans student IDs for voting and expands the role of state agencies
in “verifying” citizenship, a process that often leads to mistakes that
eligible voters pay for.

This is not about election security. It is already illegal for noncitizens
to vote. This is about holding power.

DeSantis and Florida Republicans are pulling stunts like this because they
can see the ground shifting.

Latino voters in Florida are not a guaranteed vote for anyone, but there
are clear signs that Trump’s chaos, high costs, and aggressive immigration
agenda are pushing people away, and there are signals that their vote will
go to a Democratic candidate. So when politicians know they might lose,
they try to change the rules.

If this can happen in Florida, it can and will happen in other states —
but Voto Latino will do everything in its power to fight back against
these attacks on our democracy.
