Timely Sign-on Opportunity for Black State Legislators
Deadline: April 12

The Congressional Black Caucus of the United States Congress invites Black lawmakers across the globe to sign on ([link removed]) to a joint letter in support of the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent (PFPAD) ahead of the convening of its 5th session in Geneva.

This letter is a historic act of collective alignment among Black lawmakers across the world. By signing on, you affirm that the pursuit of justice for people of African descent is not confined by geography, but strengthened through shared purpose, coordinated leadership, and a recognition of our interconnected futures.

May 1 marks International Workers’ Day, or May Day. In solidarity with workers, SiX invites state legislators to join our International Workers Day of Action, elevating our #Listen2Workers campaign ([link removed]) . Cyber Safety and Security Training

April 23: For Legislator & Staff

SiX is partnering with the Democracy Security Project (DSP) on a series of safety and security trainings for legislators and staff. Join us for our next session on April 23, 3:00-4:30 pm ET / 12:00-1:30 pm PT for a virtual training that will provide specific tools and tips to effectively defend against and respond to digital threats. Trainers from DSP will provide action steps and insights about how you can increase your privacy both on and offline.

National Survey on Women’s Leadership

April 24: Survey Deadline

SiX has partnered with Future Forward Women and Vote Run Lead, as they launch Shaping Power, Shaping the Future: The National Leadership & Governance Survey ([link removed]) —the first national, bipartisan study of women state legislators that captures leadership in action. This survey will help show what women’s leadership really looks like and what support elected leaders need to succeed. By sharing your experiences as a woman lawmaker, you can help build stronger tools, resources, and investment for women in office. Participants will also receive a personalized leadership profile and free access to helpful policy resources.

Building a Pro-Worker Economy

May 29: Legislator and Staff Briefing

In recognition of International Workers Day, join SiX and the Center for Economic Democracy on May 29, 1 pm ET / 10 am PT for a briefing on how every state can solve the affordability crisis by building a pro-worker economy.

This briefing will share successful case studies across the country states can adapt, from resourcing worker centers, strengthening unions, and enabling worker ownership.

Pesticide Immunity Bills

For three sessions running, Midwestern and Southern states have been battlegrounds for controversial pesticide immunity bills ([link removed]) . The so-called Bayer bill (also known as “Cancer-Gag” or “Failure to Warn”) would prevent farmers, workers, and families from taking legal action if they suspected an illness like cancer was the result of pesticide use.

SiX’s Director of Organizing, Food, Agriculture, & Rural Economies, Emma Newton spoke on the Canary in a Cornfield podcast ([link removed]) about SiX’s organizing efforts with state legislators to push back against these corporate efforts to avoid responsibility for harmful pesticides.
