Despite Unprecedented Challenges, Clean Energy Is Still Growing in the US. The Future Is More Uncertain ( [link removed] )
********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Clean energy development in the U.S. tells a mixed story.

On one hand, 90% of new energy capacity added last year came from clean sources. On the other, coal use is ticking up alongside a spree of new planned gas plants. Meanwhile, federal barriers are making it harder to get solar and wind projects off the ground.

These contradictions matter, because electricity demand went up 2% in 2025 alone — with no signs of slowing down. How the U.S. meets this growing power demand will shape energy costs, emissions and grid reliability for the rest of the decade. We unpacked where clean energy stands today, the trends that defined a turbulent year and what comes next.

Why a ‘No-Risk’ Category Would Weaken EU’s Landmark Anti-Deforestation Law (EUDR) ( [link removed] )
*********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

The EU’s new deforestation law is set to take effect in December, but pressure is mounting to weaken it before it even starts. A proposed ‘no-risk’ category would exempt some countries from proving their products are deforestation-free — creating a wood laundering loophole that could make the rule unenforceable and put tropical forests at greater risk.

How Could Rising Temperatures Affect Your City? ( [link removed] )
*******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Every fraction of a degree of warming brings more heat waves, floods and droughts. We mapped how 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F) versus 3 degrees C of global temperature rise could affect 1,000 of the world’s largest cities — and what it means for where you live.

In This Indonesian City, Community-Led Design Is Improving Water and Sanitation ( [link removed] )
******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

In Makassar, Indonesia, 40% of residents live in flood-prone informal settlements. Residents would regularly wade through waist-deep water after storms or ride makeshift rafts down flooded alleys. Now, a community-led program has installed raised walkways, wetlands and sanitation systems designed by the residents themselves — giving 1,400 people safer, cleaner living conditions.

Data centers are expected to drive the majority of U.S. electricity load growth between 2025 and 2030. They account for 55% of the total — far outpacing industrial manufacturing (20%), oil and gas/mining (5%) and other sources (20%).

The US and Israel’s war on Iran is creating a humanitarian crisis affecting millions of people in Iran and far beyond.

It is also posing uncertainty in energy markets around the world. WRI’s President and CEO Ani Dasgupta spoke with The New York Times to discuss if this means the world might begin to reevaluate its dependence on oil and gas.
