Avik Roy: It’s Safe to Reopen Schools
|
From the story: The good news is that amid the heated rhetoric—and the genuine fear—the accumulating scientific evidence and real-world experience is reasonably consistent. We do have a path to reopening schools this fall, especially for our youngest children. For older children, the story is also encouraging but less definitive. We must start with the fact that school closures cause significant damage to children—damage that videoconferences cannot repair ( WSJ). A look at the absolutely left-wing political way the media has handled the pandemic ( WSJ). A study out of Greece indicates kids are unlikely give COVID-19 to kids or adults ( Online Library) Meanwhile, a study on masks shows “ They don’t protect a wearer from the virus entirely, they protect a wearer from dangerously higher “viral loads” — so the body gets exposed to a tiny amount of the virus, and the immune system encounters it, figures out how to fight it off, and eventually builds up an immunity ( National Review).

After rattling off the messes, city by city, York states “ This is an election year. Election years are times for partisan arguments. They don’t have to be nuanced. They don’t have to be subtle. And one Republican message this year is: The people who are tolerating and even cheering on the forces of disorder are Democrats. What will the Democratic candidate for president, Joe Biden, do about that? Probably not much.”
