Dear John,

How much we pay for our food is being decided right now.

Without a free trade agreement with Europe, new tariffs will mean higher prices for basic food items.

If prices are driven up, and safety standards are driven down, the most vulnerable will be forced into buying unsafe, unhealthy food.

Research by Best for Britain shows these tariffs will mean a 10 to 20 per cent price increase for everyday items on our supermarket shelves. A packet of pasta and a tin of chopped tomatoes, which could be a cheap and nutritious meal for a family, will go up in price by nearly a fifth.

We need a proper, Affordable Food Deal <[link removed]>with Europe, to keep your weekly shop reasonably priced: for the everyday shoppers, and especially for those already struggling to put food on the table. So sign the petition and call for an Affordable Food Deal today.

The UK currently pays no tariffs on imports from Europebecause we are in the Single Market and Customs Union. This will end when the Brexit transition period runs out on 31st December 2020.

Many of our favourite foods primarily come from Europe. While some items like pasta might be packaged in the UK, the raw materials have to be imported - and there will be tariffs to pay. <[link removed]>

There’s no way around it - we need an Affordable Food Deal which guarantees free and easy trade with Europe to keep our food affordable, accessible and healthy. Sign the Affordable Food Deal now.

The UK ate nearly 350,000 tonnes of pasta last year. Four fifths of our pasta came from Italy. New tariffs mean Brits could spend nearly £20 million more a year on this staple.

Unless we secure an Affordable Food Deal <[link removed]> which lets us import our favourite foods quickly, easily, and without unnecessary additional costs.

Join us and call for an Affordable Food Deal.

Best wishes,

Cary Mitchell,

Director of Operations, Best for Britain
