This is not what relief looks like, John.
While signing four COVID-19 executive orders, Trump announced that if re-elected, he would permanently cut funding sources for Social Security and Medicare.
Taking away health care funding in the middle of a pandemic for the 58.4 million Americans who rely on Medicare isn’t relief – it’s cruel. Meanwhile, 62 million Americans receive social security benefits. A permanent tax cut that leaves millions of seniors in jeopardy is dangerous and wrong.
Save Medicare and Social Security »
After Senate Republicans failed to pass a COVID-19 relief bill before going on recess, Trump was desperate to save face for the GOP. But his announcement to cut funding for Medicare and Social Security shows that there is clearly no real intention in these orders to help those who are struggling during this crisis.
Social Security and Medicare are two programs that actually provide ongoing relief and support directly to the people who need it most. Unlike Trump’s tax cuts that only benefit his wealthy friends, these programs are a key safety net for millions of women and working families.
Especially now, when there is no end in sight to our economic recession and mass unemployment continues to adversely impact women and women of color – we cannot afford cuts like these.
This is just the latest reminder of what’s at stake in this election. So much was already on the line in this election – and now we can add Social Security and Medicare to the list.
