John,
Instead of working with Congress to craft a deal to help millions of people in the midst of a pandemic, Donald Trump issued a series of executive actions from his luxury golf club in New Jersey this weekend. The marker he signed them with was bold, but his actions weren’t. They do almost nothing to help people who actually need assistance.
Ten days ago, the highly effective $600 boost to jobless benefits expired for millions of working people. Trump’s actions cut that benefit in half with no assurance that states can pay any of the difference. Plus Trump’s order will take months to implement and then only last 5 or 6 weeks.
Trump also ordered the funding stream for Social Security to be undermined. In his words, this would be a payroll tax holiday, but what this translates to is undercutting the resources for Social Security. This action does nothing to help those who are unemployed, and would also result in employees having to pay into our earned benefits in a lump sum around Christmas time.
This is a nonsensical plan opposed by both Democrats and Republicans because it is clear that the true intent is to undermine our earned benefits, not assist jobless people.
