Hopefully you’ve seen the news by now: New York Attorney General Letitia James filed legal action to dissolve the NRA!
When we shared this news with you last Thursday, we highlighted some of the actions we’ve taken since our founding to lead this massive victory. You probably thought that this was great news and then moved on with your day -- but YOU helped make this happen! March For Our Lives played a big part in this news, and we wanted to explain in a little more detail exactly what we were able to accomplish with your support. Check out this brief timeline of our fight to takedown the NRA: ⬇️
March 2018: Millions of people around the world rallied to the cry of young people that enough was enough. We marched on the National Mall and on streets across the nation to call BS on the corrupt NRA and gun lobby.
August 2018: During our Road to Change tour, we shut down the street in front of the NRA Headquarters in a historic protest. This was our second warning that these pissed-off young people aren’t going anywhere until there is change.
September - October 2018: While researching which NRA-connected companies to boycott, we noticed the way the NRA -- a so-called “non-profit” -- operated was very different than how other non-profits, like us, operate. Like spending millions of dollars on travel agents and luxury suits.
November 2018: We file an official complaint to the New York Attorney General’s Office detailing concerning and potentially illegal activity by the NRA and their leadership, including Wayne LaPierre. You can read that letter here.
May 2019: In response to our letter, the New York Attorney General’s Office officially opens an investigation into the NRA, citing the very suspicions we wrote about a few months earlier.
June 2019 - July 2020: After the investigation began, the NRA just starts...imploding. NRATV gets canceled, the Supreme Court refuses to protect gun lobbyists against the families of victims of gun violence, NRA-backed politicians lose massive elections in their home state of Virginia, the Senate Finance Committee issues a report that the NRA was a ‘foreign asset’ to Russia, all while Attorney General James deepens her investigation into their corruption and illegal activity.
August 6, 2020: Attorney General James files her lawsuit against the NRA, calling for their dissolution. BIG WIN!
Help us celebrate this massive victory by donating towards our $100,000 goal today!
It took awhile to get here, but at the same time….an organization of young people (with the support of people like you!) has made HUGE steps to taking down a 148-year-old organization that has been buying politicians for decades in less than three years. How embarrassing, NRA.
Our letter makes the facts clear -- the NRA lies. They lie about guns keeping us safe, they lie about our movement, and they lie about their finances. They funnel millions to politicians who are paid to stay silent, while nearly 40,000 Americans die from gun violence every year. And we’re sick of it. Thankfully, millions of Americans and Attorney General James are, too.
Don’t get us wrong, there is still work to be done -- the NRA is bad, but so are all their bought-and-paid-for elected officials (who we will be taking down in November). But between this victory and the launch of our latest ad, our momentum is stronger than ever before. Help support our grassroots movement by making a donation to help us reach our $100,000 goal so we can take down the NRA once and for all.
