Dear John,
When we learned of the devastating explosion in Beirut last week, our thoughts went immediately to friends and partners in Lebanon. The horrific explosion killed 220 people and left 300,000 people homeless.
Tarek Zeidan, the Executive Director of Helem, Lebanon’s oldest LGBTIQ organization, told us:
"Helem's staff and volunteers have joined the relief effort in Beirut and are working to remove debris, help set up community kitchens, and dispensing emergency aid to members of the community who have been affected by the explosion.”
To give assistance where it’s needed most, OutRight is partnering with Helem, to help LGBTIQ+ people most directly impacted by this disaster. The Helem office is located less than half a mile from the epicenter of the explosion and suffered heavy damages as a result. However, despite the destruction, staff and volunteers have been working to rebuild the center, support the LGBTIQ community as well as being heavily involved in city-wide relief efforts to ensure the most vulnerable are not left behind – but they can do so much more with your help.
Will you join OutRight today with a donation to help our Lebanese partners survive and recover from this tragedy?
100% of all funds raised will be provided to Helem to use for the support of the LGBTIQ community in Lebanon, the center's relief efforts, and any other urgent needs on the ground resulting from this catastrophe.
The word Helem in Arabic means dream. If we work together today, a better tomorrow doesn’t have to be a dream. Please join us by making a donation now to help our partners recover and rebuild so they can resume their work toward a more equitable future for all LGBTIQ people in Lebanon.
In solidarity,
Maria Sjödin
Deputy Executive Director
