Dear Friend,
Play is one of the most important parts of childhood. It’s how children make sense of the world, build confidence and connect with others, finding moments of joy, even in the hardest circumstances.
It’s also how they grow. Through sport and physical activity, children develop the social, emotional and life skills that help them reach their full potential. They learn to cope with stress, process difficult emotions and maintain a sense of stability and belonging.
International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is a reminder of that power. This year’s theme, Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers, highlights how play connects children and underscores what’s at stake when they are denied the opportunity to play.
Today and every day, play can’t wait. With your support, UNICEF can help more children access safe spaces and resources that allow them to play, connect and experience essential moments of childhood, wherever they are.
UNICEF helps children around the world access meaningful opportunities to play. That includes recreation kits, which provide sports equipment, games and other ways for children to play. For children affected by conflict and disaster, these kits also help create opportunities to connect, learn and heal.
A gift today can help more children experience the power of play — gaining strength, building endurance and creating a sense of control, even in the face of unimaginable hardship.
