Hey John,
Last month, while our neighbors struggled to put food on the table and watched the price of gas soar, Brad Knott made half a million dollars [[link removed]] on the stock market.
If he were any random person off the street, I’d say, “good for him.” Building up a nest egg is part of the American dream, and I mostly don’t begrudge it to anyone.
But things are different when you’re a member of Congress.
Because he serves in federal office, not only does Brad Knott get access to kinds of information that the rest of us don’t – he actually has the power to influence the stock market himself through the legislation he supports.
Outside of politics, we call that “insider trading,” and unless you’re a member of Congress, it usually carries some pretty hefty penalties. And just because it isn’t illegal for our elected representatives to do it, that doesn’t make it right. And it feels especially wrong while so many of our neighbors are struggling just to make ends meet.
Members of Congress shouldn’t be trading stocks while in office, period. In the House, I’ll push for a congressional stock trading ban, because our elected representatives shouldn’t be able to use privileged information to make easy money while their neighbors are pinching pennies.
But here’s the thing: this isn’t a problem that starts or stops at Brad Knott. In fact, elected representatives on both sides of the aisle have a big stock trading problem. This isn’t a partisan issue, and it isn’t one we’ll fix until we change who is in Congress. And for that, I need your help.
Will you please make a donation to my campaign today so we can win this race and start fixing some of the things that are wrong with our government? Any amount will help us stay competitive and win this race so we have a representative who will fight for your wallet, not his own. [[link removed]]
