Friend,

You may have noticed that my emails over the past few months have looked a little different. For the most part, I decided not to ask for your contributions. Let me tell you why.

Like you, I get hundreds of emails from politicians who are begging for political donations. Those emails are, at best, uninteresting, and at worst, annoying. They also always seem to take the reader's support for granted.

The results of the last election made clear that Democrats need to dramatically change how we communicate with voters. Our base is tired of being asked to chip in $5. Instead, they want to hear how Democrats in office are making life more affordable. They want to see the progress that we're making in holding the Trump Administration's feet to the fire. They want to feel that politics isn't a dirty word, but instead a calling to make our community a little bit better.

That's why my emails have focused on providing you with substantive updates on what's happening in Washington, what I'm hearing in Connecticut, and how I'm working for you. The response has been amazing, and I won't stop sending out those messages.

But the stark reality is that Democrats need resources to get our message out to an audience outside of our base. We all know people who tune politics out -- perhaps because they don't think it impacts their lives, or they don't believe either party has their best interest at heart. Drawing those folks back into the fold means spending money on digital outreach and investing in grassroots organizing. That costs money.

So, with some hesitation, I'm asking if you'll consider chipping in to my campaign.

I really do hate to ask, most of all because I want you to open these emails without fear of being asked for a contribution. But the more we raise today, the more substantive and informative I can make these emails going forward.

Thanks, as always, for your support. It means the world to me.

— Jim

P.S. — And if my own reelection isn’t especially competitive, I’ll make sure the resources we raise are used to support Democrats working to win back majorities in the House and Senate.
