In Defence of Globalisation

Globalisation has faced opposition for centuries. But these debates have again moved the fore with anti-globalist populist victories at the polls, concerns about supply chain vulnerability and rising geopolitical tensions between Russia, China, the EU and the USA.
After decades of rising integration of nation states into a broader global trading order, a reversal seems to be on the cards. Should we celebrate the return of the nation state and the rise of the civilization state? Should we fight against the end of an era of global citizenship, and push back against those that would put up barriers to trade?
Our panel will examine the costs of decoupling parts of the global economy from one another, the risks involved in shutting out whole peoples because of the actions of their governments, and what a reorganisation of the global order would end up looking like anyhow.
Speakers:
- Matt Kilcoyne is the Deputy Director of the Adam Smith Institute (Host)
- Bruno Macaes is a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute and a former Europe minister of Portugal. He is the author of The Dawn of Eurasia and Belt and Road.
- Cindy Yu is broadcast editor at the Spectator. She was born and raised in Nanjing, China, until the age of 10. She read politics, philosophy, and economics at the University of Oxford, where she also read for a master of science in contemporary Chinese studies.
- Dan Ikenson is the Director of the Cato Institute's Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies, focusing on WTO disputes, regional trade agreements, U.S.-China trade issues, steel and textile trade policies, and antidumping reform.
