Air travel was one of the hardest-hit industries from the coronavirus lockdowns as business and leisure travelers stayed home. The more than 90% decline in travel rippled to other industries, through fewer hotel stays, meals out, and other commerce by travelers.

Tracy Montross, Regional Director of Government Affairs for American Airlines, and Michael Cooper, State & Local Government Affairs Manager for Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority will discuss the outlook for airlines and airports, and how they are working to support hospitality and the broader economy.

Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee Recap

Greg Potts, Virginia Government Relations Office for WMATAjoined the Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee last Wednesday, August 5, to discuss their multi-phased approach to recovery.

WMATA plans to move into Phase 2: Managed Re-Entry starting this Sunday, August 16. Metrorail will see a return of peak/off-peak service distinction, increased service to 90% of pre-COVID levels, expanded hours of operation (5:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m. on weekdays), charging for parking, and expanding their after-hours ride-hailing program. Bus changes will occur on August 23 and include expanded hours of operation (4:00 a.m.-midnight), weekday service at 73% of pre-COVID levels, with continued rear-door boarding and no fare collection.

WMATA expects to remain in the Managed Re-Entry phase at least through next spring of 2021. They also encourage businesses to update their Return to Work Survey frequently, as it helps them keep service ahead of demand to ensure social distancing on rail and bus.

Grow your business by sharing leads! By participating in one of our LeadShare groups, you can build relationships, improve your speaking skills, and support other businesses within your group by sharing introductions and warm referrals.

Each group meets twice a month, the 1st and 3rd Tuesday at 8:45-10:00 a.m. or the 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 11:45 a.m-1:00p.m., and any Chamber member in good standing is eligible to participate. However, we do limit attendance to one vertical industry per member. If your industry is represented, you can be added to the waitlist for one of these groups or a potential new group. The groups are provided as a free benefit to Chamber members.

If you’re interested in joining one of our LeadShare groups, please contact [email protected]. More information can be found on our website.

Now more than ever, people need the physical and mental benefits of exercise to boost the immune system, help alleviate stress, and facilitate a restful night’s sleep. Gyms are still a great place to exercise, even during the pandemic, assuming they implement the proper safety protocols.
