Today, on what would have been Maya Angelou’s 98th birthday, I’ve been
thinking about the power of her words — and what it means to live them.

She once wrote, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you
know better, do better.”

I carry that with me.

In her honor, I want to highlight the work of the Maya Angelou Schools &
See Forever Foundation, an organization carrying her legacy forward every
single day.

Too many young people in this country are told their future is already
decided.

But I’ve seen what happens when we choose a different path; when we invest
in people, not just punish them. When we lead with opportunity, not
judgment.

This organization helps justice-involved youth rewrite their stories and
build brighter futures.

It’s exactly the kind of moral leadership we need right now.

Leadership that invests in education and community.
Leadership that refuses to give up on people.

That’s the kind of leader I’m working hard to be in the Senate. I firmly
believe no one should be counted out.

Not in Maryland. Not anywhere.

Today, we honor Maya Angelou not just by remembering her words but by
living them every day.
