Week of August 10, 2020

The risk of exposure to COVID-19 is still very real -- especially out in the streets! Consider getting tested for peace of mind, collect data on this virus, and keep our communities as safe and healthy as we can right now. Be sure to wait at least 5 days after attending a protest to get tested for a more accurate result (false negative rates average 20%, so if you feel even the slightest bit sick please STAY HOME). And when you show up, mask up!

Strike School Session I: What is a Union

Tuesday, August 11th @ 5:00pm – 6:30pm

Image

DSA-LA’s YDSA Summer School is a series of political education sessions and organizer trainings by and for students and campus workers across Los Angeles. The theme of this summer’s political education sessions is Strike School: How Collective Action Gets the Goods. The purpose of this series is to provide a basic overview of unions, strikes, and how we as socialists fit into the picture. No previous experience in political education is required!

Session I of Strike School—What is a Union?—covers how a union works, what a union does, and why we, as socialists, should care about them.

Hollywood Labor’s The Redlist Meeting

Tuesday, August 11th @ 7:00pm – 9:00pm PST

Image

THE REDLIST is a project to promote socialist art from disenfranchised groups across the country, aimed at breaking the culture industry and shifting the kind of stories Hollywood can tell to a more left-leaning paradigm, one which both includes and promotes the stories of the marginalized, the poor, and the oppressed. It would build institutional power to promote diverse, socialist talent to help push the public perception of what socialism is and what it can achieve.

Food Service Workers Public Comment

Thursday, August 13th @ 2:00pm – 3:00pm PST

Image
With the Food Service Industry in a pandemic-fueled crisis, business owners and politicians have shown us we cannot trust them with responsible health, safety, and economic relief measures.

Now is our time to say we’ve had enough, and to center our voices as workers when discussing our industry. Food service workers deal with many workplace and social issues without a collective outlet to voice their concerns. If you’ve faced problems such as discrimination, unsafe food handling, illegal kitchen setups, labor law violations, wage theft, sexual harassment, retaliation from supervisors, a lack of health & safety protocols or PPE during the pandemic, or more...we want to hear from YOU!

DSA 101

Saturday, August 15th @ 11:00am – 1:00pm

Image

Are you new or newly returning to DSA? To Los Angeles? To the Left? Then join us for DSA 101!

At this orientation, we’ll talk about what capitalism is, how it functions, and why socialism is ideologically opposed to it. Participants will also learn about the history of our organization and our chapter in particular, the current projects we’re working on, and how you can get involved. This is not a lecture, but a meeting for new and veteran organizers. We’re excited to chat with you!
