We As Democrats Believe:
"When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something. . . to do something. Our children and their children will ask us, ‘What did you do? What did you say?’ .... we have a mission and a mandate to be on the right side of history."

Former Young Democrats Leader Runs for Register of Deeds
New Hanover County native Clayton Hamerski is the New Hanover County Democratic Party nominee for County Register of Deeds. The Registrar is manager and custodian of real estate related documents such as deeds and liens. The office also manages other records such as birth, death and marriage certificates and business names.
Clayton is a UNCW graduate who earned a degree in Political Science and Public Administration. He and his wife Carter live in Wrightsboro where they serve in various capacities in the community and in the party. Clayton currently serves on the Cape Fear Economic Development Council, the Cooperative Extension Advisory Council, the MLK Celebration Committee of SENC, and he chairs the Cape Fear Realtors Community Affairs Committee. In the past, Clayton has served as the 3rd Vice Chair of the New Hanover County Democratic Party and the President of the Young Democrats of New Hanover County, and he currently serves on the State Executive Committee of the North Carolina Democratic Party.
Clayton, a Realtor, said his frequent interactions with the Register of Deeds office compelled him to run for the office. "As Registrar, I want to modernize the office of Register of Deeds and ensure that all residents of our county have access to its services," he said. "Some of my priorities include enhancing cybersecurity, adding multilingual translation options, and creating a culture of respect and heightening customer service."
New Ballot by Mail FAQ From State Board of Elections
If you're a little confused about voting by mail, you're not alone. Millions across the country who have never used an absentee ballot are doing so this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The SBOE just published a new FAQ with answers to some of the most common questions voters are asking. Here's a tip revealed for the first time in this FAQ: Postage for your Absentee Ballot will be 55 cents or a Forever stamp. For more answers to your questions about voting by mail, click here.
Democracy Heroes Needed to Staff Polling Places
(From the North Carolina Board of Elections) North Carolina election officials are searching for democracy heroes to work at polling places and voting sites for the November 2020 general election. If you're interested in becoming an election worker for 2020, let the State Board of Elections know by completing this election worker interest survey. We will forward the information you provide to your county board of elections. You may also contact your county board of elections directly to apply.
Election officials provide essential services such as setting up the voting equipment, checking in voters, processing ballots, assisting voters with special needs, and closing down/securing the voting site at the end of the day. To qualify an applicant must be a registered voter who resides in the county where they wish to serve.
The State Board encourages voters of all ages to lend a hand to the democratic process in this important presidential election year. Election workers often consist of retirees and older members of a community – groups at higher risk during the COVID-19 pandemic. The State Board is committed to protecting election workers' health and safety and has promised to provide appropriate protective equipment and to enforce social distancing guidelines.
New Hanover Ballot Requests Total 7,280
Absentee Ballot requests pending at the Board of Elections continue to increase in number. We have blown past the 2016 General Election Absentee Ballot total, which was 4580. Ballots requested now will be mailed on September 4. To request a ballot, fill out the request form here, then print it and mail it to the Board of Elections. Alternatively, you can call the Board of Elections at (910) 798-7330 and they will mail you an application.
Democratic volunteers continue to phone and text Democratic voters to encourage them to submit a ballot application. Peer to Peer texting is an effective and inexpensive way to reach voters, but it's not free. To contribute, click here.
Blue Ballots Now Available
We just printed Version 1 of the Blue Ballot. Click the image to view an enlargement. Thanks to Kimberly McCall for designing it, and Stephanie Fetzer for proofreading. Other volunteers are working on a version that you can download and print from your computer, and a version viewable on a mobile phone.
In previous years we passed these out at events, hung them on doors during canvasses, distributed them at churches, and handed them out at polling locations. All of these methods of distributing Blue Ballots may be difficult or impossible this year. If you have ideas about a place or event to distribute them, we ask you to click here and give us your ideas. Do you go to a church that will set them out? A restaurant? An event? Will you distribute them at Black Lives Matter rallies? Please put on your thinking cap and give us your ideas.
County Democratic Party Office to be Staffed Wednesdays
Starting on August 19th the New Hanover County Democratic Party office at 5401 New Centre Drive, Wilmington will be staffed on Wednesdays from noon to 2:00 p.m. beginning August 19. We will use it primarily for pick up and drop off of yard signs, blue ballots and other items. We do not anticipate scheduling meetings at this time.
Our Office Manager is Harry Tuchmayer. Harry wants to make this work and is willing to discuss alternative arrangements if Wednesday 12-2 pm does not work for you. You can reach him at (910) 616-8552.
Democrat campaigns and volunteers really need this this service but there are health and safety considerations:
We require masks and distancing.
Visitors will be blocked just inside the door by tables preventing further entry.
Nobody enters further without consent of the volunteers.
One customer inside the door at a time.
Others should wait in the hall, socially distanced.
We're serious about this - most of our volunteers are seniors. They have authority to refuse service and ask you to leave if you don't comply.
