My name is Samia, or Ms. Hindi to my high school students — including Maggie Toulouse Oliver.

There was no doubt in my mind when I had Maggie in my classroom that she was a natural leader.

I had been teaching school for 20 years when Maggie was in my class. I knew almost immediately she was a special young teenager.

Maggie was amiable, intelligent, inventive, hard working, honest, loyal, and versatile. She was a valued and respected leader in my class and in many other areas at Highland High School - including as Drum Major of the HHS Marching Band. Maggie still has all those positive attributes and more.

That's how I know she'll be a great senator for New Mexico, but she needs our help to get her there.

I know it's easy to think that politics is broken. That we're just choosing between who will compromise sometimes, and who will compromise their values.

But I refuse to give in to that kind of cynicism, especially when we've got an amazing candidate like Maggie running.

She's never treated those with less power as a bargaining chip, and she's always stuck to her values even when it was tough. That's the kind of leadership New Mexico needs in the Senate, and we have got to make sure that we get her there.
