John,
Take a look at this photo taken by a student from North Paulding High School in Georgia on their first day back to classes since the coronavirus outbreak in March:
In the same week, 260 employees from Georgia's largest public school district were sent home to quarantine after testing positive for — or being directly exposed to — COVID-19.
It's evident that, for many districts, opening schools right now is an irresponsible and dangerous choice. Coronavirus infections across the country are soaring, but Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos chooses to actively ignore the experts and science as she continues to lead Trump's charge to reopen all schools this fall.
As an educator, Jamaal understands how important in-person instruction is. But more than that, he understands that now more than ever, we need to prioritize the health and safety of the public — not the administration's political agenda.
That's why he's joined a coalition of progressive groups and lawmakers to call for Betsy DeVos's resignation. Will you add your name to this petition?

The Trump administration chooses to drive forward their political agenda, time after time — and when it comes to the safety of our children and educators, there's no one more unqualified to make decisions than Betsy DeVos.
In addition to threatening the health of millions of children, DeVos has cut funding for childhood literacy programs, rolled back protections for children of color and LGBTQ students, allowed schools to use federal money to buy guns, and more.
DeVos' tenure as Secretary of Education has created irreparable damage to our nation's education system. We can't allow this to continue. Please join us today to demand that Betsy DeVos render her resignation as Education Secretary immediately.
Thanks for all that you do,
