Hi friend,

Have you ever wondered how it feels to live in a country in debt crisis?

My country, Zambia, is trapped in a vicious debt cycle. We're one of 54 countries in crisis, where governments are spending more on servicing debt than on healthcare and education for our citizens.

This April I’m leaving Zambia for the UK, to speak about how the twin crises of debt and climate have affected me, my family and my community. It’s a chance for me to tell my story, and to share how people like me in Zambia are demanding change.

I’ll be speaking at events in London and Manchester about living in a country where the debt crisis is being compounded by the climate emergency – and discussing how together we can call for urgent action.

In my own family, we have felt the strain of the country’s debt crisis; through rising living costs and reduced access to things that used to feel stable, like constant electricity and affordable food. The reality for us is that we don’t have access to healthcare or medicine in hospitals. Classrooms are overcrowded and economic opportunities are severely limited.

I know that the real life experience of those at the sharp end of the debt and climate crisis are often missing. That can make it feel abstract when in fact it impacts lives in very direct ways. My father’s house was swept away through floods in 2023. He was forced to move away from our ancestral lands – and because of the debt crisis, his house has still never been rebuilt.

Debt justice to me means creating a system that is fair, transparent and puts people first. The UK government can play its part by introducing a debt justice law which would help countries like Zambia get debt cancelled.

Together, I believe we can turn the tide on the debt crisis and win justice for countries like Zambia. I’ll look forward to seeing you at one of our events.
