Friends,

Across the country, and across my district, students and teachers are heading back to school to begin a new year. This is a fresh start for everyone.

As I'm headed back to Congress after our August recess, this is a good time for me to reflect on upcoming priorities. Education and school safety are two top priorities.

All of our students deserve access to a high-quality education. Our teachers deserve the support, funding and full resources to educate our children. Teachers and students deserve peace of mind when entering schools every day, and parents should feel safe sending their kids to school.

In Congress, I will continue working to make schools safer, make college more affordable and ensure equal opportunities for all students. I'm also supporting resolutions to increase public school teacher pay and increase funding for public education.

I've talked to parents in my district this summer, and I know school safety is a top concern. That's why I supported a resolution with Jahana Hayes this year to ensure federal funds will not be used to train or arm school personnel, like teachers, with firearms. I also co-sponsored the Safe Schools Improvement Act of 2019 to address and take action to prevent bullying and harassment of our students.

I will continue this work with my colleagues in Congress to improve our public school facilities, ensure our teachers are supported, improve school safety and recommit to investing in our education system.

Good luck to all the students, teachers and parents this year! Best wishes for your new year.

Jim
