AVFCA and Asm Ta Take the Lead on Genetic Privacy
While Also Tracking Key California MAHA Legislation

AVFCA continues to focus efforts in California working directly in Sacramento to ensure families are represented and protected in the policies that impact their daily lives.

We are proud to share that A Voice for Choice Advocacy is the official sponsor of AB 1727 , introduced by Assemblymember Tri Ta. We are grateful to Asm. Ta for his leadership in advancing this important legislation, rooted in concerns we identified during COVID-19 testing about the risk of DNA being collected and used without consent.

AB 1727 addresses a critical gap in current law. While California has taken steps to regulate direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies such as Ancestry.com and 23andMe, there are still significant areas where a person’s DNA can be collected, tested, or shared without their knowledge or consent.

AB 1727 establishes clear protections by:

* Prohibiting the collection, testing, or transfer of an individual’s DNA without their express consent
* Creating accountability for the unauthorized use or disclosure of genetic data
* Reinforcing a simple but essential principle: your DNA belongs to you

Why does this matter?

DNA is the most personal and identifying information we have. It can reveal deeply private details about our health, ancestry, and family relationships. Unlike other personal data, it cannot be changed if it is compromised. At the same time, genetic data is becoming increasingly valuable and targeted. Federal agencies have raised concerns about foreign entities seeking access to genetic data and DNA databases. This raises not only privacy concerns, but broader security risks. Without clear protections, individuals are left exposed to misuse that current laws do not fully address. AB 1727 is a proactive step to ensure that privacy, consent, and individual rights remain at the center of how genetic information is handled in California.
