Team,

This is a long email because my decision to reject corporate PAC money is a deeply personal one that I wanted to share with you.

For two years a group of volunteers and I worked to pass the Alec Smith Emergency Insulin Bill in order to make insulin more affordable and accessible to those like me who need it to survive.

On the Minnesota State Senate floor, we were up against teams of large lobbying firms hired by Big Pharma. As a group of everyday Americans, volunteers, all juggling full-time jobs to fight for this bill, we'd already spent as much money as we could into making our case — so we didn't have the funding that the pharmaceutical companies had as leverage.

These corporate lobbyists had the financial power to block this bill by influencing Senate Republican leadership with over $300,000 in campaign contributions. After the first year, their money was successful in blocking our bill.

But we didn't give up the fight. Eventually, with help of the press and media scrutiny, we were able to put enough pressure on the Senate Republicans to pass a revised version of the bill.

However, the night before it passed, we found out that Big Pharma had filed a lawsuit against the bill, claiming it was unconstitutional — they never had any intention of this bill actually becoming a law.

These elected officials had accepted money to prop up their re-election campaigns in exchange for tanking our affordable insulin bill because it would hurt their big corporate donors.

They knew that there was no way we could compete with their unlimited financial resources in a court case — our passion and our hard work would never be enough because money has far too much influence in politics when it matters most to the American people.

And that's why I took the pledge to reject any and all corporate PAC money. Not just from Big Pharma or from health insurance companies, but from any corporation. I know all too well that these donations always come with special interests and political favors, and I refuse to be the voice for anyone except my constituents.

So when I say that I am running a people-powered campaign that relies on grassroots donations, I mean it. I will only accept donations from the everyday people of our country because that is who I am fighting to represent. My opponent, Pete Stauber, took over $50,000 in corporate PAC money last cycle alone, and I need to show him that we don't need shortcuts, compromised handouts, or special interests to win this.

Will you consider making a donation today of any amount to help me make up for the billionaire corporate dollars I'm up against? Pitch in now to help me flip this seat blue and fight for everyday people.
