Friend,
This week marked the 55th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. The late Congressman John Lewis risked his life to secure its passage, and spent the rest of his lifetime defending it. But years of attacks have weakened the Voting Rights Act's essential protections.
Our right to vote is threatened by modern-day suppression efforts—strict voter ID laws, cuts to early voting and polling places, purging of voter rolls, and now undermining the USPS when more voters will rely on vote-by-mail to stay safe.
As we honor the late John Lewis and commemorate the Voting Rights Act’s 55th anniversary, we must carry forward his legacy. South Carolina Democrats are doubling down on our efforts to protect the sacred right to vote in 2020:
1) We’ve created a full-time voter protection unit dedicated to expanding ballot access and defending voting rights. No South Carolinian should be forced to choose between their health and their right to vote this year. That’s why we’ve put forth litigation to expand early voting, eliminate the witness requirement, and reinstate the State of Emergency allowance so that every voter can vote absentee. Will you support these crucial efforts by donating to our Voter Protection Fund today?
2) We’re mobilizing South Carolina voters to elect Democrats who will defend voting rights. We need a Senate that will pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of 2020, and a President who will sign it into law. Electing Jaime Harrison and Joe Biden in South Carolina will be a major step in the fight to restore the Voting Rights Act.
I hope you’ll join our fight to defend John Lewis’ legacy and every South Carolinians’ right to vote. Your contribution to SCDP’s Voter Protection Fund will help us combat voter suppression and elect leaders who will pass John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of 2020.
