Another Meaningful Step Towards Restoring
Religious Rights For Children in CA
AVFCA Goes to Washington DC
Two weeks ago, the President’s Religious Liberty Commission held a national hearing on religious liberty in healthcare and education, including vaccine mandates in schools.
A Voice for Choice Advocacy is proud to share that California families were represented on this national stage. AVFCA’s Grassroots Director, Karen, testified alongside her daughter, speaking on behalf of families impacted by the elimination of religious exemptions for school vaccine mandates in California. Only five individuals were selected to participate on this panel.
Karen’s testimony brought forward the real-life impact these policies are having on families who are being forced to choose between their faith and their children’s access to education, including the simple and heartbreaking reality expressed by her daughter, who shared her wish to be able to attend school like other children. These experiences reflect what families in California and across the country are facing.
Karen also referenced AVFCA’s ongoing lawsuit challenging SB 277 , ensuring that this issue is part of the national conversation on religious liberty and parental rights. Christina Hildebrand was also present at the hearing, and the AVFCA team had the opportunity to engage directly with members of the Commission about the work being done to support families in California.

AVFCA Lawsuit Reminder
AVFCA is currently engaged in litigation challenging California’s elimination of religious exemptions for school vaccine mandates. Our case argues that denying parents any religious exemption violates First Amendment protections and the right to direct the religious upbringing of their children.
The case is currently before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals , with oral arguments expected soon. This case has the potential to advance further and play a critical role in restoring religious rights for families in California.
AVFCA remains the only organization in California advancing religious exemptions through every available avenue — including litigation, legislative advocacy, federal engagement, coalition building with faith leaders, and direct support for individuals navigating religious exemptions.
This is more than a legal case. It is about ensuring that no child is denied access to education because of their family’s faith. AVFCA is grateful for the opportunity to bring the voices of California families to the national stage and ensure they are heard.
