Hi John,

Wow. This week, we got what might very well be the first good news of 2020:

We at Brady have fought for decades to end the NRA’s stranglehold on our democracy. We are so close.

After Jim Brady was shot in the 1981 assassination attempt on President Reagan, he and his wife, Sarah, made it their life's mission to defeat the NRA. Jim and Sarah were gun owners and lifelong Republicans themselves. And they knew that the NRA doesn't represent gun owners. They knew it serves just one purpose: to make the gun industry rich, at the cost of American lives.

This new lawsuit could mean it's finally the end of the NRA's reign of terror. Will you help us deal the final blow?

Last year, we filed a complaint with the IRS seeking to investigate and ultimately revoke the NRA’s tax-exempt status. If we deliver enough signatures on our complaint, we could send it over the edge. This is the moment — we need as many people as possible to sign on in a show of opposition to the NRA. Please, will you add your name now?

Jim Brady called the NRA "the Evil Empire" for a reason: They spend millions of dollars paying off politicians to block lifesaving legislation — just like they're paying off Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump now. The NRA even tried to stop the Brady Bill. But thanks to supporters like you, we fought and we won.

With this new lawsuit, we're closer than ever to ending the NRA, once and for all. Thank you for joining us in this fight for a safer America.

Remembering Jim "The Bear" Brady (August 29, 1940 — August 4, 2014)

This week, we remembered Jim "The Bear" Brady, who died on August 4, 2014. Jim was serving as White House Press Secretary to President Reagan when he was shot in the head in the 1981 assassination attempt on the President. Jim's death in 2014 was ruled a homicide as a result of his gunshot injuries.

After the shooting, Jim and Sarah dedicated their lives to strengthening our nation's gun laws. They first set their sights on passing the Brady Bill, the first federal law to require background checks for gun sales. It took Jim and Sarah over six years to win the Brady Bill, which President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1993.

But they didn't stop there. They also helped win the passage of the 1994 federal assault weapons ban. Today, it's one of our organization's top priorities to reinstate the assault weapons ban, which — thanks to lobbying by the NRA — Congress let expire in 2004.

Today, we continue Jim and Sarah's legacy by fighting across Congress, courts, and our communities to enact solutions that will prevent gun violence and save lives.

Watch our short video to learn more about Jim and Sarah Brady’s legacy.

Two Years of Our Program to "End Family Fire"

“Our End Family Fire campaign has been seen by millions and is changing not only how we store our weapons, but reaffirming that responsible gun ownership saves lives.”

Brady President Kris Brown on MSNBC

Exactly two years ago today, we launched our End Family Fire program to address a shocking reality in America: Every day, eight children and teens are unintentionally injured or killed due to an unlocked or unsupervised gun in the home. Our goal is to end "family fire," which is a shooting involving an improperly stored or misused gun in the home that results in death or injury.

Family fire is a major contributor to America's gun violence epidemic.

🎧 What's Behind "Fatal Encounters?"
"Fatal Encounters" is a project by journalist D. Brian Burghart to build a national database of people who are killed through interactions with police. We talk about why it took a journalist to start such a database, how this information can save police and civilians, and what the statistics say about racial inequities around police violence.

🎧 The Day Jim Brady Was Shot (from the archives)
This week marked six years since Jim Brady died. Doctors ruled his death a homicide from the gunshot injuries he had sustained in the 1981 assassination attempt on President Reagan. Listen to our podcast episode about how that one bullet changed the course of history, igniting the fight for the Brady Bill and shaping the modern movement to end gun violence in America.

“Almost a year ago Brady, in a detailed letter filing to the IRS, set forth many of the details noted in the complaint filed by AG James. ...Real lives have been lost due to the NRA’s practices and approach to gun policy in America. Their greed has come at a human cost. We applaud the New York Attorney General for this important step in bringing this organization to justice and securing an America in which no one is above the law, not even the NRA."
