How much do you spend on the weekly shop?

If we don’t get a full trade deal with the EU, basic food items like pasta, tinned tomatoes and olive oil will skyrocket in price. 

Import tariffs will be slapped onto our food from 1 January 2021 if we don’t get a good deal with Europe. That will mean greater expense for shoppers. 

For many, these increases will be an unnecessary expense. But for some, a couple more pounds on a weekly shop is simply unaffordable. In the UK, one in ten children already go hungry. For a wealthy nation, that is disgraceful.

That’s why we’ve launched the Affordable Food Deal campaign. We want to raise awareness about the impact the government’s own import tariffs will have on those already struggling to put food on the table. We want the UK and the EU to work together to guarantee our basic food items remain affordable, accessible and healthy. That means a comprehensive trade deal must be reached. If we don’t get the ‘oven-ready’ deal we were promised, the price of food will skyrocket. Cheap and nutritious staples like dried pasta and tinned tomatoes that come from Europe will become more expensive. These are items the UK cannot produce enough of  itself, or import in enough quantity from outside Europe. 

That means our only option is an Affordable Food Deal with the EU if we want to keep food prices low, and quality high. 

Parents should never have to choose between giving their children healthy food, or giving them nothing. That’s why the Affordable Food Deal also means ensuring the UK doesn’t lower it’s food standards.

How much we pay for food, and the quality of our food is being negotiated right now. This is our chance to make sure more people aren’t plunged into food poverty. Please, sign the petition for affordable, healthy food for all. 

For many, COVID has worsened their struggles with food poverty - people have been laid off, parents are struggling to provide extra meals kids would normally get in school and the whole economy is facing a major downturn. During lockdown the number of people needing help from a food bank quadrupled. 

Britain is already responsible for one in five people in Europe living in food poverty. We must act to ensure this shameful statistic is not made worse. 

Now is the time to make sure our food stay affordable, accessible and healthy. Now is the time for the Affordable Food Deal.
