This moment marked years of advocacy and hard work to ensure responders and survivors finally have the certainty of care they were promised. It was about keeping our word and delivering long-overdue stability for those still living with the health impacts of 9/11. Andrew was proud to help lead the effort in Congress to get this done and is grateful to every advocate and responder who never stopped fighting to make lifetime funding a reality. Garbarino (R-NY) delivered the following opening statement in a Committee hearing to examine the consequences of the ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown, in particular the impacts on the department’s core missions, federal workforce, and interagency security coordination across the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), United States Coast Guard (USCG), and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Funding for DHS and its components has been stalled by Democrats, despite bipartisan passage of a Fiscal Year 2026 DHS appropriations bill by the House of Representatives in January and March." Michael Gustafson was awarded the Athlete of the Year Award and a Congressional Certificate for not only being Athlete of the Year but also for his service to the Autism community. Casework Highlight: Navigating Medicare Coverage Abroad When a Long Island constituent suffered a severe injury while traveling abroad, they were forced to pay out-of-pocket for emergency air transport back to the United States. After Medicare denied coverage and appeal deadlines had passed, Andrew’s office stepped in to help navigate the situation. Through direct engagement, Andrew’s team was able to successfully resolve the case and secure coverage for the transport, lifting a significant financial burden for the constituent and their family. Helping constituents navigate federal agencies is one of the most important services our office provides. If you ever need assistance with a federal agency, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Keeping Up with Congress Fighting to Fully Fund DHS This week, Andrew voted once again to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security. With DHS now unfunded for half of FY2026, Americans are seeing longer airport lines, frontline personnel working without pay, and increased strain on critical security operations during a time of heightened threats. Andrew remains focused on getting this resolved and supporting the men and women who keep our country safe and secure every day. Meeting with FASNY Leaders Andrew met with leaders from the Firefighters Association of the State of New York, including the President of FASNY, to discuss their ongoing work supporting and training firefighters across New York. Firefighters are on the front lines in communities across Long Island, answering the call at all hours and playing a critical role in keeping families safe. Andrew remains committed to making sure New York firefighters have the resources and support they need to do their jobs effectively and continue protecting the communities they serve. Andrew's Community Flood Resilience Act During a Financial Services Committee subcommittee hearing, Andrew spoke on his Community Flood Resilience Act and how it directly impacts communities like those here on Long Island. With coastal storms and frequent flooding continuing to affect neighborhoods across Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Andrew’s legislation is focused on making sure communities are better prepared before disaster strikes and able to recover faster afterward. The bill works to better align mitigation efforts with insurance tools and encourages stronger public-private partnerships so local communities aren’t left navigating recovery alone. Meeting with New York Letter Carriers Andrew was glad to speak with members of the New York State Association of Letter Carriers. He thanked them for their continued service and discussed the importance of supporting the postal workforce that so many Long Island communities rely on every day, especially for timely and reliable delivery.
