Team, there are less than three months until Election Day — but we’re still in the midst of a pandemic. That means everyone needs to be ready to get their ballots in safely and early, to ensure they’re counted. This election will be a defining moment in our fight for environmental, economic, and racial justice. We cannot afford to have any votes not counted. Read on for the latest from Team Tom, plus resources for you to take action.
📰Tom endorsed Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s Reparations Commission bill (H.R. 40). He’s committed to helping the Congresswoman gather support for this important bill — the first step in addressing what Reparations could look like for the descendants of enslaved Africans. To read more about that effort, plus the latest on California’s COVID-19 recovery and the 2020 election, check out Tom in the News here.
💻Last week, Tom participated in an online discussion with California business owners about their experiences during the #ShopSafeShopLocal campaign and how that effort is supporting the state’s economic recovery. The census is crucial to our democracy, but the Trump administration is trying to undermine it by moving the deadline up a month. This could create a severe undercount and underrepresentation of vulnerable communities. Make sure you’re counted today and encourage others to do the same by sharing the link on social media: https://my2020census.gov/.
Yesterday marked 55 years since the passage of the Voting Rights Act — honor that anniversary and the legacy of the late Congressman John Lewis by urging Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to restore and extend the Voting Rights Act. Email Sen. McConnell today.
Worth a Review: Mail-in voting
The situation: As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread, states are adapting so that people can vote safely. By expanding mail-in voting, governors hope to ensure that people can vote while protecting their health and their community.
The problem: Trump and the GOP are trying to block mail-in voting. Earlier this week, Trump vowed to sue Nevada to stop their expansion of mail-in voting. His threat to issue an executive order on absentee ballots and filing lawsuits violates states rights.
The reason: He is afraid. Trump doesn’t want a fair and safe election because he would lose. Instead, he wants to force people to choose between risking their lives by voting in person or giving up their Constitutional right to vote. When Trump’s response to the pandemic is, “They are dying. That’s true, and — it is what it is,” there’s no question that he’s willing to do anything, even sacrifice Americans, to stay in power.
Our next step: if you haven’t already, be sure to sign up to vote by mail today — and then share the following link on social media to ensure your friends and family are signed up too.
Tom’s take: “Trump’s greatest legacy will be his innumerable attempts to dismantle our democracy. His false claims of mail-in voting creating fraud are merely an attempt at suppressing the vote and undermining confidence in our elections. Don’t let him scare you — we can vote him out of office on November 3, and we will.”
