Dear John,
I want to share some updates with you from Congress and across our nation. Here are three things you need to know:
-
The House of Representatives sent its latest COVID-19 economic relief plan, the HEROES Act, to the Senate back in May. I am extremely disappointed in the Senate’s failure to take up this vital legislation due to partisan gridlock. Our legislation would provide support to health care and frontline workers, distribute funds for state and local governments, and significantly strengthen unemployment benefits including those for independent contractors. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to place millions of Americans above partisan points and pass this bill.
-
The House passed a package of six appropriations bills for the fiscal year 2021, funding several federal departments including Defense, Health and Human Services, Education, Housing and Urban Development, Justice, Energy, Labor, and Transportation. Highlights of this minibus include strengthened voter protections, investments in COVID vaccine research, grants to explore police reform and Violence Against Women projects, and pay raises for the troops. I am proud of this year’s appropriations process and I encourage the Senate to work with the House to ensure we adequately fund our government.
-
The National and Georgia branches of the Farm Bureau presented me with the Golden Plow Award, the highest agricultural honor for a member of Congress. I am truly honored and grateful to receive this recognition for my advocacy of farmers, whom I am privileged to serve. I proudly reaffirm my vow to uphold America’s farmers, ranchers, and rural communities as the strongest in the world, even as we face new challenges. Thank you again to the Farm Bureau. I am touched.
Thank you so much for reading my updates and for standing alongside me in my campaign for reelection. Your support keeps me going. Please visit my website for more information and news. Stay well, have a pleasant weekend, and know that I am working hard for you.
Sincerely,
Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr.
