[Virtual] Prayer Wall for Vanessa Guillen

See it here. | Have you signed it yet?

Vanessa Guillen’s story has inspired many brave soldiers to come forward about their experiences with harassment, sexual assault, and rape in the military. #IAmVanessaGuillen stands as a digital movement that calls for change. Last week, LULAC joined hundreds of advocates in Washington, D.C. in the March for Vanessa Guillen. Also, the Guillen Family was present and later met with President Trump at the White House.

SPECIAL NOTE: If you are part of an organization or a community organizer that would like to host a local vigil with LULAC on National Vigil Day for Vanessa Guillen on August 15, please email us at [email protected].

Our thoughts and prayers remain with Spc. Vanessa Guillen's family, her friends, and fellow soldiers as we grieve together in the wake of this tragedy. Join us in sharing a message of hope on our virtual Prayer Wall for Vanessa.

Here are a few messages left by members of our community impacted by the loss:

Sul wrote: “Dear Vanessa, My prayer for you is to be at peace and happy wherever [you’re] at. You were a courageous [woman] to have stood for what you believed. I’m so proud we shared the same uniform and although I never got the honor [of] meeting you, I love you. RIP”

Maria wrote: “Vanessa, I owe you so much. Thanks to you, I was finally able to reveal the sexual harassment I experienced by a superior in the military. I am sorry that it took this terrible injustice to finally give me the strength. I will always hold you dearly in my heart and will continue to speak out in support of you and your family.”

Dorty Anne wrote:Vanessa you have led me to so many amazing people, you are my Angel, Rest In Power while we won’t [rest] until you have Justice.”

  • Sindy Benavides, LULAC CEO as the host

Virtual Rally to Honor Heroes - Encore Streaming

Join in! | Renaming Our Nation's Military Bases

In 1948, President Harry Truman signed executive Order 9981 which required the government to desegregate the military. The order also led to the establishment of the President’s Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Services. This past Sunday, LULAC joined Citizens Against Intolerance in premiering the video stream of a virtual rally. Its purpose was to highlight our combined commitment to reflecting our country’s diversity within the military. Let’s transform America’s historical focus away from symbols that promote racial subjugation and inequality.

Take a moment and watch the stream at LULAC.org/heroes/live.

Speakers include:

  • Troy E. Mosley, CEO of Citizens Against Intolerance
  • Sindy Benavides, CEO of LULAC
  • Dawn and Richard Collins Jr., from the Richard Collins III Foundation
  • Carl Snowden, Founder of Caucus of African American Leaders
  • Brigadier General (R) Ty Seidule, Chamberlain Fellow from Hamilton College

Empower Your Nonprofit Organization

Did you miss it? | Look back on Part 1 AND Part 2

The world has shifted to virtual in so many ways and it can be hard to understand how to effectively raise awareness for the causes we care about in our life. We’re excited to be joining our partner, Grow With Google, for a two-part Grow With Google On-Air workshop series created to help nonprofit organizations better use digital tools to reach their goals.

In Part 1, we look at how to best recruit volunteers and drive online donations using AdGrants. We also learnhow to raise awareness about our work and create an impact using Google products like G Suite, YouTube, and Google Maps. Visit goo.gle/GrowOnAirJuly27 to watch it on demand.

For Part 2, we focus on how to connect students and jobseekers to free, valuable digital resources that can grow their careers and businesses. See it at goo.gle/GrowOnAirJuly29.

Check out both episodes and much success to you!
