We must end
the school to confinement pathway.
That’s why I just introduced The Counseling not Criminalization in Schools
Act, in partnership with Rep. Ilhan Omar, and Senators Elizabeth Warren
and Chris Murphy.
Instead of funding a growing police presence in our public schools and
criminalizing our students, it’s time to finally invest in the critical
staff like counselors, nurses, and social workers who actually make our
schools safer and more supportive.
Research has shown that police in our schools do not make students any
safer. When police officers have a presence in schools, students are more
likely to have their learning interrupted, more likely to be subjected to
physical restraint and interrogation, and more likely to be referred to
law enforcement and funneled into the school to confinement pathway
For too many young people — particularly Black and Brown students,
immigrant students, students with disabilities, LGBTQ+ students and other
historically marginalized students — the very presence of police officers
in schools increases the likelihood that they will be criminalized and put
on a path to confinement for everyday childhood behavior.
This legislation will prohibit federal funds from being used to
over-police and criminalize our students, and instead encourage schools to
invest in the trauma-informed personnel, health care, and support staff
necessary to equip students to learn and thrive.

pathway by donating $3 — or any amount that you can afford
— to our movement today. By contributing, you will help us keep up the
fight in Congress to pass these much needed laws to dismantle our system
of mass incarceration and ensure that every student is truly safe in our
schools.
