A California jury just found Meta and YouTube liable for deliberately addicting a young girl to their platforms and causing serious mental health harm including anxiety, body dysmorphia, and suicidal thoughts.

This landmark decision confirms what parents have known all along: these companies build products designed to lure kids in and keep them there — and they knew they were causing them serious harm.

As a nurse and a mom of two teenagers, I’ve seen firsthand how social media can harm kids’ mental health. Nothing matters more to me than keeping our children safe. Until now, parents have been left to navigate this crisis alone while these companies carried on with business as usual.

This decision is a step forward. But it also makes clear how much more needs to be done to hold Big Tech accountable.

That’s why my plan for Wisconsin takes this head-on: banning addictive design features for minors, ending surveillance advertising that targets children, giving parents the right to sue platforms when they cause harm, and ensuring companies are held accountable when their platforms expose kids to sexual exploitation.

Big Tech isn’t going to fix this. It’s on us to set clear rules and enforce them.
