There is hopeful news in the fight against addiction. The CDC recently released new data showing drug overdose death rate in 2024 declined by more than 26% from 2023.

This marks the largest one-year drop ever recorded.

Expanded access to naloxone and treatment and stronger prevention are contributing to this decline. But we also know that the more than 79,000 lives lost in 2024 is still far too many. And without sustained effort, this progress could easily stall, or reverse.
