A Message from City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen:
On behalf of Nottingham City Council I want to say how saddened we all are by the incident in Beirut that has claimed hundreds of lives and injured thousands more. The images of the explosions and the aftermath were shocking and show just how big and devastating the incident was.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Beirut and all those affected.

Face coverings must be worn in council venues
Droplets from coughs, sneezes and speaking spread COVID which is why new guidelines are being put in place that require face coverings to be worn in council venues and a range of other new locations from Saturday 8 August 2020. It is already mandatory to wear face coverings at indoor venues such as museums, galleries, heritage sites and libraries. In Nottingham, council venues where face coverings must be worn include; Newstead Abbey, Wollaton Hall, Libraries, Leisure centres and Tourist attractions.
It is important you make sure that your face coverings:
- cover the nose and mouth while allowing people to breathe comfortably
- fit comfortably but securely against the side of the face
- be secured to the head with ties or ear loops
- be made of a material that is comfortable and breathable, such as cotton
- ideally include at least two layers of fabric
- unless disposable, it should be able to be washed with other items of laundry according to fabric washing instructions and dried without causing the face covering to be damaged
As areas like Leicester, Greater Manchester show though Nottingham has made good progress in tackling the virus, the virus is still out there and things can go backwards. It is essential we follow good practice like wearing face coverings in order to avoid a local lockdown.

Key workers stepped up, Government must pay up
We have started a petition as a part of our lobbying of Government to fully fund COVID related costs.
It would be a kick in the teeth for Nottingham and the key workers we stood to applaud week after week if the government didn’t stick to its promise to stand ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with local authorities during this crisis. Despite the £23m received from government so far, we estimate the cost of Covid-19 to the Council at £85m leaving a shortfall of £62m.
These COVID related costs are the result of essential services the Council, key workers and volunteers have provided during the outbreak; supporting frail elderly and those with disabilities in care homes, sourcing our own PPE supplies, contacting 18,000 vulnerable people for support or helping to fund local businesses.
