Namaskaram! Great day at UT Austin yesterday. Sun shining, people happy,
kittens and butterflies on Speedway.
Some conversations that stood out… Savanah naturalized in September, got
registered to vote with us yesterday. Said it’s a relief to have her
citizenship and be able to use it to vote given what’s going on in our
country.
I met biotech and public health students who’d just finished coming out of
their “Cancerland” class, which they described as the sociology of cancer.
They asked “How can we be spending 17% of GDP on health and have a country
as sick as ours?”
Ben from El Paso said he wants to finish his education and then come back
home and open a PT clinic.
Isabel, a freshman from McAllen said she helped to pass a ballot
initiative back home to limit campaign contributions, and told me seeing
us doing our work across the state inspired her to get it done.
Sourik told me about being forced to cast a provisional ballot in the last
election only to find out it was never counted. So he updated his
registration with us to make sure his next vote counts!
I saw the incoming UT student government president, Kiera Dixon
(congratulations!).
I met a class of Malayalam students who taught me a few words in Malayalam
— Namaskaram is hello — and pointed out that Malayalam is the same
forwards and backwards. They also told me that UT is the only place in the
country that has a dedicated Malayalam program.
Rama and Reela got registered and told me why.
Our Powered by People volunteers were on fire yesterday — Susan, a
registration machine! Thanks to the always awesome University Democrats,
to Gabby and Jacob, Adit and Wendy, Lesa, Wes and everyone who came out!
