The coronoavirus pandemic has made the situation even worse. Land grabbers, miners and illegal loggers are ignoring quarantine rules – and taking advantage of the government’s inaction when it comes to protecting community land.
Our colleagues at Amigos da Terra Brasil (Friends of the Earth Brazil) are facing mounting challenges. But we are not powerless.
Last year when hundreds of our supporters donated, it made a real difference.
For example, working alongside indigenous, quilombola, and fisher communities, Friends of the Earth Brazil helped suspend a huge port construction project in Maicá, Santarém [2]. The project directly threatened the way of life for the surrounding quilombola communities, violated their rights and severely compromised the region’s biodiversity.
Our colleagues in Brazil are so effected because they work with people whose lives are being torn apart by the fires and the industries that fuel them. So if you can, please donate today to help them continue their crucial work.
