Today it is clearer than ever that the abuse of animals in cruelly overcrowded intensive farms is bad for people as well as for animals. 

Animal farming has brought us outbreaks of bird flu, swine flu, campylobacter, salmonella and many other devastating diseases. Intensive farming allows these diseases to thrive. The current Covid-19 crisis, which has killed more than half a million people so far, may have started in animals.

However, it is still the animals themselves who suffer the worst consequences, and on an enormous scale. Pigs live in barren overcrowded sheds where they may see no daylight. Millions of hens are crammed into cages where they cannot spread their wings. And broiler chickens suffer chronic pain because their rapidly growing bodies are too heavy for their bodies
