Dear friend,
The Department of Justice has proposed a rule that would shield its own attorneys from state bar disciplinary authorities — and the public comment window closes April 6, 2026. Lawyers are needed now to voice their concern about the proposed rule. A strong, organized response from the legal community creates both a record for future litigation and a signal to policymakers that the profession is paying attention.
View the project here ([link removed]) to get started now or join We The Action and the National Women's Law Center on Friday, March 27, at 1PM ET ([link removed]) to learn more about the proposed DOJ rule that would shield its attorneys from accountability by the state bar.
This webinar is designed for legal professionals looking to learn about the regulatory comment process and how to submit a comment on the DOJ proposal. Volunteers will be provided with a clear understanding of the risks posed by this proposed rule and its impact on the legal profession. States have a long history of setting and enforcing rules for lawyers, and Congress has explicitly said that DOJ attorneys must follow them. However, the newly proposed rule would allow the DOJ to intercept ethics complaints against DOJ attorneys and freeze state bar investigations indefinitely. The result is a direct threat to the independence of legal ethics oversight and the accountability process that the profession depends on.
