Dear John,

Today National announced a very targeted helping hand to those who need it most as costs rise due to the Middle East conflict.

We know sharp price increases at the pump are putting pressure on many Kiwis and we believe the situation is serious enough that support is necessary.

However, every dollar we spend must be paid back over time.

That’s why today’s announcement is targeted and temporary.

From 7 April, 143,000 working families with children will get an extra $50 a week. A further 14,000 working families will receive less than $50 per week extra.

The increase will be temporary, lasting for one year or until the price of 91 octane petrol drops below $3 a litre for four consecutive weeks.

The policy is carefully targeted to families in the squeezed middle – parents who are working hard for a living, are not eligible for main benefits, and yet have modest household incomes with which to support their children.

We know that every decision we make now carries longer-term consequences and we will continue to be disciplined with every decision we make.

We will not repeat the mistakes of Covid, where excessive spending saw debt reach $120 billion, inflation soaring to a 32-year high and mortgage rates skyrocketing. Kiwis are still grappling with the effects of that today.

This is a measured response to help the squeezed middle that is careful not to increase inflation or government debt.
