Dear John,
I wanted to provide a quick update on our case. The judge ruled today that our lawsuit is moving forward as a class action after we made our arguments on July 30.
Thousands of asylum seekers will now be covered by our lawsuit challenging the government’s policy of wrongfully turning back asylum seekers at the border.
The Council couldn’t have done this work without your support. Thank you.

John,
The U.S. asylum system is being dismantled by the Trump administration. However, there was a positive development in the American Immigration Council’s case challenging U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s unlawful practice of preventing people from seeking protection by turning them away at the border. A judge just tentatively ruled that this case may proceed as a class action—that means thousands of people may challenge the government’s systemic rejection of their asylum claims. But the case isn’t over. Our legal team is preparing to make our arguments defending asylum seekers before a judge on July 30. The Council is up against a government that is determined to take down the U.S. asylum system. Will you help us prepare by making a gift today?
Sincerely,
Beth Werlin Executive Director |
