Jack,
When I talk about making the ultrawealthy pay their fair share, people
often point out that Wisconsin only has 7 billionaires. That is, according
to [ [link removed] ]Forbes.
Meet Joe Berrada, Milwaukee's biggest landlord and Wisconsin's newest
billionaire. He didn't make the Forbes list, but [ [link removed] ]new reporting from
John Johnson, a Marquette Law School research fellow, revealed that
Berrada recently disclosed a net worth exceeding $1 billion in federal
securities filings.
In 2021, the Wisconsin Department of Justice sued his companies for
charging tenants fees they didn't owe and confiscating renters' property.
They settled for $1.7 million, the largest housing settlement in state
history.
The following year, he filed 850 evictions in two weeks, overwhelming the
Milwaukee County court system. When a tenants union raised safety concerns
after a fire at one of his properties killed a young child, he sued them
and lost.
This January, two of his buildings lost heat in the dead of winter,
displacing dozens of tenants for two weeks. The fine for leaving people
without heat in January? $365.76.
Nearly a third of Wisconsin residents are renters. I'm one of them. And as
anyone who's ever rented in Wisconsin can attest, the system is built to
protect landlords, not tenants.
As governor, I'll fight to ensure that every tenant facing eviction the
right to a lawyer, give enforcement agencies the teeth to go after
predatory landlords, and get the state out of the way so cities can pass
rent control if their communities need it.
And, while we’re at it, we’ll tax billionaires like Berrada and invest in
public infrastructure like universal childcare, paid leave for all, fully
funded schools, and fairer, cheaper healthcare.
