The world lost voting rights champion, John Lewis, less than three weeks ago. As a fellow member of the Ways and Means Committee, John was a friend, colleague, mentor, and inspiration, who fought tirelessly against voter suppression. This is a fight we must still carry on today.

Due to the Supreme Court's Shelby County v. Holder decision in 2013, GOP voter suppression tactics are pervasive. It seems like every election season we hear of unnecessarily strict voter ID laws, voter roll purging, and the intentional closing of polling places -- tactics aimed to keep traditionally Democratic voters away from the polls.

These tactics are not new. This is why so many leaders of the Civil Rights era like John Lewis fought to help pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which made discriminatory voting practices illegal.

The groundwork is there. Now, it's up to Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act and protect the rights of voters nationwide.

Will you stand with me and the thousands of Americans demanding Congress act now to protect voters?

Thanks for taking action,
