# [#]John, I deeply understand the struggles working families in Southwest Washington face – because I’ve faced them myself.

Before I was elected to Congress, my husband Dean and I could only afford health insurance for our son, because the additional $1200 a month to cover ourselves was simply out of our budget.

Programs like the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which was enacted 16 years ago this week, have allowed millions of Americans to obtain health insurance and care they previously couldn’t afford. This was a huge step forward, but serious problems remain with how our healthcare systems operate.

I won’t stop fighting to expand access and lower costs for rural communities, veterans, and working families across Southwest Washington because all of us deserve access to affordable, quality health care.

I have worked hard to increase access to affordable care for rural communities, veterans and working families across Southwest Washington by spearheading bipartisan legislation to restore critical health care transportation services for veterans, increasing telehealth opportunities through expanded rural broadband access, and lowering costs by going after harmful middlemen who enrich themselves by jacking up the price of prescription drugs.

I’ve said it before – I won’t sit by and wait for someone else to fix the problems we face and honestly, who better to advocate for working families in Washington than a working mother who knows the struggle to afford health care like me.

The months ahead are going to be hard as we face another tough re-election battle, but I won’t be distracted. I’m determined to keep making progress on this and so many other issues that impact the day to day lives of the Southwest Washington community I call home.
