| | Panel Discussion August 10: People-Centered Transit |
| | What would it look like for Muni to truly serve communities across San Francisco? Our transit system is being fundamentally restructured in order to survive the pandemic. This transformation offers an opportunity to center transit on those who depend on it most. Join us for a panel discussion with three community leaders - Queen Vanessa Banks, Cristina Rubke, and Queena Chen - as they share their visions for transit that works for seniors, people with disabilities, and underserved communities who rely on transit. | | | Save the date: Transit Week begins September 21 |
| | Transit Week is is our yearly celebration of San Francisco transit. This year, it's happening *virtually* the week of September 21. Mark your calendar! We'll lift up stories of folks making transit better for us all, reimagine the future of transit coming out of the pandemic, and host fun virtual rider-hangouts and social events. Do you have time to volunteer? We could really use your help preparing for and running this weeklong celebration. Some of the skills we're looking for are video editing, writing, interviewing, visual design, and willingness to help out. We've included a more comprehensive list in our sign up sheet - check it out! |
| | | Tomorrow: Emergency Lunchtime Panel to Save Public Transit |
| | California alone is facing a $3 billion deficit in transit funding through the end of 2020. Nationwide, that number rises to $32 billion. You already know that transit is essential to get essential workers and carless people where they're going, mitigate climate change, and improve air quality. But now we have to convince congress. Tomorrow, join a lunchtime panel to hear from some of California's top transit leaders and advocates - Tamika Butler, Jamario Jackson, Beth Osborne, Jeanie Ward Waller, and Michael Pimentel - about the funding hurdles transit is facing at the national level, the ongoing advocacy efforts to save it, and what you can do to save transit. We're co-sponsoring the panel with SPUR, TransForm, ClimatePlan, Dreamcorps Green for All, Seamless Bay Area, Friends of Caltrain, Urban Environmentalists, and Greenlining Institute. |
| | | Caltrain funding measure has a chance |
| | Seven separate boards need to pass the proposed 1/8-cent sales tax funding measure in order for it to make it onto November's ballot. After a month of pitched disagreement, these seven governing bodies now seem to be trending toward agreement on a "clean" measure that would fund Caltrain plus a separate resolution linking future funding to governance reforms (though it's by no means set in stone). The Santa Clara County board of supervisors approved the unconditional funding measure on Tuesday and two more boards are meeting about it today. Tomorrow, Friday, at 2pm, The San Francisco Board of Supervisors will convene a special session to vote on this, new version of the measure. This funding measure, along with governance reforms, has been a moving target, so stay tuned for additional updates. For more details, check out the Green Caltrain Blog. |
| | Membership Month Highlight: We met our goal! |
| | Membership Month this year came on a backdrop of unprecedented challenges for transit and for all of us. But you met the moment and helped us blow our goals out of the water. We: - Raised $12,015 that will fuel our fight for strong transit recovery in San Francisco
- Signed up 36 brand new members
- Renewed 85 expired or expiring memberships
- Held two events about making transit work for riders (Make sure to join the People-Centered Transit Panel on Monday!)
To all who donated, renewed, joined, retweeted us, attended our events, and took actions on our behalf last month: Thank you. There are more battles ahead on the path to safe, funded, reliable transit and we are so grateful to be on your team. |
| | Meet our Members - part 4! Membership month is over, but we have one more member we want to feature: Chris Arvin. A designer with Remix, Chris believes frequency and accessibility are the most important features of a great transit system. |
| "Frequency is the difference between having to plan your life around transit and knowing it will be there when you need it. It's both about getting more people to use transit and making it a reliable, dependable system for the people already using it. Accessibility is the other one. We talk a lot about service cuts. But if you think about it, when an elevator breaks down at a station, we're cutting service for people. When a bus stop isn't accessible to people we're cutting service for people. And when someone can't afford transit we're cutting service for them too." |
