On this day in 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law banning racial discrimination at the ballot box.
Civil Rights heroes, like Representative John Lewis, risked their lives for the right to vote. They marched, bloodied and bruised, for the chance to exert their Constitutional right to have their voice heard.
But in 2013, the Supreme Court dismantled a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, rendering it essentially useless. Since then, Republicans have run rampant with despicable voter suppression tactics.
Across the country we’re seeing blatant voter suppression in the forms of closed or inaccurate polling places, long lines, discriminatory voter ID laws, purged voter registration rolls and threats to close the post office — especially in communities of color.
Last year, Democrats introduced the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the Voting Rights Act and protect the right to vote for all Americans.
But every day since, Republican leader Mitch McConnell has refused to bring it to a vote in the Senate. And our opponent, Cory Gardner, just lets him get away with it. It’s outrageous.
Republicans have known for a long time that if more people vote, they lose. So, in a desperate attempt to keep their grip on power, they resorted to undermining our democracy and locking folks out of the ballot box.
Now, we’re calling on the Senate to put partisanship aside and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act immediately. Sign your name to honor John Lewis’ legacy and ensure everyone has access to the ballot box this November.
